Recovery from drug or alcohol addiction is no walk in the park. In order to help ensure a successful and long-lasting sobriety, family and friends must take on a number of responsibilities. In this entry, we will discuss the roles of family throughout the recovery process.
Intervention
If a loved one is struggling with drug or alcohol addiction and is unwilling to seek treatment, the family must come together by means of intervention to recommend a solution. Intervention provides friends and family members with the opportunity to confront the addiction head-on, while emphasizing the importance of professional help.
Support
Once the addict has entered rehabilitation, family members must do their part to support the recovery process. Many recovering addicts experience difficulty adjusting to sobriety, making family involvement all the more important. The more support, the better the outcome.
Encouragement
Family and friends should make a commitment to encourage the addict throughout treatment. Recovery can prove a very emotional time for many people. The more assurance an addict has that they can overcome their addictions, the more they will believe it themselves.
Environment
Family members should do their best to provide a safe and positive environment for the addict during and post rehabilitation. This environment should be clear of any alcohol, drugs and stressors that may trigger the addict to relapse. Without a safe environment to rely on, the recovery will likely fail.
Strength
There is no cure for addiction. Family members must stay strong for weeks, months and sometimes years to help maintain the recovery. Friends and family must make it understood that they will not support the use of alcohol or drug use, making a point to step in again if necessary.
